Karon Beach is a 3km long, crescent-shaped beach with glistening sand and pristine water surrounded by lush greenery. It is amusing to hear the beach sand making squeaking sounds, when you walk on it.

Karon Beach is the second largest beach on Phuket. Located on the west coast of Phuket, sandwiched between Kata and Patong beaches, Karon Beach offers excellent sunset views. However, unlike the crowded Patong Beach, Karon Beach is quiet and peaceful. The long stretch of white sand has plenty of beach umbrellas for hire.

The beach area has seen little or no development. Most of the resort complexes are situated across the road, away from the beach. Restaurants, bars and other miscellaneous establishments are at either ends of the beach.

Transportation

Karon Beach lies 20km away from Phuket Town. While coming from Phuket International Airport, collect travel voucher from the airport. For taxis, it is 650 THB and for a seat in a minibus, it is 150 THB. The taxi takes almost an hour and minibus takes longer.

For moving in and around Karon beach area, hire a motorcycle from one of the local shops. Another alternative is to hire a tuk-tuk or taxi or take Songthaews (buses).

Dining

Karon Beach has a wide variety of restaurants and bars on the beach road, though there are quite a few Scandinavian ones. These include steak houses and Mexican restaurants. As is seen all over Thailand, fresh seafood restaurants serving Thai cuisine is the most popular among tourists. Some of the popular eateries in Karon Beach are Karon Cafe Steak N Ribs, Las Margaritas, Harry's Restaurant & Pub, Jim's Dining Room and Angus O'Tool's Irish Pub.

Accommodation

Within walking distance from the beach, there are resorts and hotels perfect for all pockets. Among the luxury resorts, Access Resort & Spa, Andaman Seaview Hotel, Le Meridian Phuket and Horizon Karon Beach Hotel are the most famous.

The midrange hotels are Ban Karon Hill Phuket, Paradise Inn Phuket and Centara Villa Phuket. Budget travelers can check in at Divers Inn, Karon Cafe Inn and Jor Guest House.

Things to Do

Karon Beach has a few good diving and snorkeling sites nearby. The southern end of the beach has exquisite coral reefs extending in the direction of Kata Beach. However, seek local information and look out for red warning flags before venturing into sea. These parts have dangerous seasonal ocean currents.

From June through September, Karon Beach experience strong southwest winds to the delight of surfers. The southern end of the beach is the surfer’s paradise. More experienced surfers head out to the open sea, where unrelenting huge waves pose stiff challenge. Surfboards are available for hire in the surf stations here.

Dinos Park Mini Golf is another attraction of the beach. This 18-hole mini golf course lies behind Marina Phuket Resort. The dinosaur themed golf course is exciting for amateur golfers and children.

The beach area has many clothing markets and tailoring shops for shopaholics. There are a few souvenir shops, convenience stores and pharmacies to meet the demands of tourists.
